Why read historical fiction books?
Historical fiction opens up unique worlds, allowing us to experience different time periods on an intimate level. This adventure can help us better understand our current time period. Books set in the past can give us a greater appreciation for our own lives.
Historical fiction reveals the creative ways that people find to approach problems. Some of those problems may be how they dealt with setbacks, rejection, love, and death. In addition, we may see the results of repeating the failures of the past.
It’s easy to think that we who live in the Twenty-first century are advanced. But, are we really the much different from people of previous time periods? Stories set in the past reveal ways we are different, but also the same. For more on this, read my article: “Thoughts on Fiction.”
Historical fiction—time travel on a budget.
Grab a book and set out on a jagged journey.
Have you ever wondered what it was like to live under Roman oppression or if you had the guts to thwart the Red Coats? Have you ever wanted to homestead in the unsettled plains or help a slave find the Underground Railroad? Maybe you’ve wondered if you could survive the Great Depression or help heal people in the midst of a plague. If so, then I invite you to step back in time to a new adventure.
This is not your boring history class.
Because history is more than just a list of dates you memorized for school. History is about people facing trials, heartaches, challenges, and opportunities, just like you and me. Historical fiction drops us in the middle of their conflicts and troubles. Historical fiction brings history to life with characters we love often dealing with struggles we can’t imagine.
